SPICED SCHEME: SUSTAINABILITY INTERVENTIONS FOR EXPORT DEVELOPMENT

The SPICED scheme - short for 'Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development' - is a Spices Board initiative by India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry. With a total outlay of Rs.422 crore, it aims to boost spice exports, increase cardamom productivity, enhance post-harvest quality, and support value addition through 2025-26.

The SPICED scheme provides financial assistance for various activities:

  1. MISSION QUALITY & SAFETY:

Upgrading post-harvest facilities; implementing food safety mechanisms, and ensuring quality, especially for turmeric.

  2. VALUE ADDITION & INNOVATION:

Supporting 'Mission Value Addition' and using Spice Incubation Centres to foster new product development.

  3. EXPORT PROMOTION:

Organizing Buyer-Seller meets, promoting Geographical (GI) spices, and assisting first-time exporters.

  4. CAPACITY BUILDING:

Training stakeholders in the spice sector.

  5. INFRATSTRUCTURE SUPPORT:

Developing packaging, barcoding, and traceability, particularly for SMEs.

Key aspects of the Scheme duration: Implementation during the 15th Finance Commission cycle, up to FY 2025-26.

Targeted Crops: Focuses on cardamom (small and large) and other major spices like turmeric, ginger, and cumin.

Sustainability: Promotes organic, sustainable, and eco-friendly farming practices.

Transparency: Uses geo-tagging for all project activities.

The scheme is crucial for increasing the share of value-added spices in India's export basket and enhancing global competitiveness.
